COVID Boosters Are Coming: Here’s What to Know

Introduction

The amount of people in the United States who have received two doses of the COVID vaccine is high, although it could always be higher. However, while many people assumed that they would be done with the vaccine regiment after the initial two shots, it now seems like more shots are coming for those who wish to combat the virus.

The idea of boosters seemed foreign even just a few months ago but now it sounds like an absolute certainty. If you are one of the millions who took both shots, you will need one more to keep your immune system strong.

COVID booster doses will be available in the United States in September, according to public health experts such as the CDC and Health and Human Services Department. According to a proposal revealed by government agencies, all people in the United States who received a two-dose vaccine will be eligible for an extra Pfizer or Moderna vaccine eight months after their second dosage.

What are COVID boosters? Why are they needed? Most importantly, do you need them?

Why are COVID Boosters Needed?

Essentially, a booster shot is yet another way to keep your strength against the virus strong. When you receive a booster shot, you are allowing your immune system to stay strong as the virus remains around.

The Delta variant has made the coronavirus so much stronger than people predicted. If it weren’t for Delta, the virus would have likely been nearly gone by now. But with the Delta Variant, as well as too many people unvaccinated, the virus is still evident in most of the country. That is why a booster is so smart. It will keep healthy people healthy and will stop the spread of the virus as more and more get vaccinated.

Is There a Difference Between a Booster and Third Shot?

A booster injection is similar to a third vaccination dose in many respects. Not all extra vaccination doses, however, are boosters.

The FDA authorized a third dosage of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine for immunocompromised persons in August 2021. This includes persons living with HIV and those undergoing immune-suppressing cancer therapy. The extra dose isn’t a booster for them. Instead, it’s included in their first round of vaccinations.

However, for those who are not immunocompromised, a booster shot really is a lot like just getting a third vaccine injection. However, that doesn’t limit its importance at all.

Who Needs Boosters?

For people who received the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccinations, a booster is suggested at least six months after the second dosage for those who are:

  • 18 to 64 years old and at high risk for severe illness from COVID. That means people with lung disease, cancer, or diabetes are prime candidates for the booster.
  • Anyone 65 or olders
  • Citizens living or working in high-exposure settings. This is people who are healthcare workers, teachers, grocery workers, prisoners, or those who live or work in long-term care facilities.

Like the vaccine shots that came before, the boosters will be covered by insurance or a free program via the government.

Worker Shortage May Keep a Lid on Job Growth

Introduction

While some people feel that the coronavirus pandemic is coming to an end and the worst is behind us, there are many signs that the pandemic is surging still. Ultimately, this is causing serious havoc for businesses and people all over the world. Things related to coronavirus are better, there is no doubt about that, but there is still a way to go.

The latest job numbers from the American Labor Department prove that the coronavirus pandemic is still affecting unemployment rate. The impact of the virus as well as a nationwide worker shortage is keeping the jobs market in unsteady shape. People are very unsure of what comes ahead. Many agree that we are definitely not out of the woods yet.

Current Job Numbers

Employers in the United States added just 194,000 jobs in September, a second consecutive sluggish increase and evidence that the epidemic is still wreaking havoc on the economy, with many businesses failing to fill millions of available positions.

According to the data released, the unemployment rate fell from 5.2 percent to 4.8 percent in September of 2021. The unemployment rate declined partly because more individuals found work. However, it also dropped. This is because approximately 180,000 people did not seek work in September, so they were not listed as jobless. In many ways, they were throwing in the towel and giving up their hunt for a job.

The economy’s slow job growth in September fell short of even the meager 336,000 jobs gained in August, and were the fewest since December, when companies actually lost employment.

Delta Variant

The labor market is becoming even more complicated thanks to a resurgence of the coronavirus, the Delta variant.

There was a time when it looked as if the virus was subsiding in America. Then the emergence of the Delta variant complicated everything. The number of cases surged to heights not seen since last year. And that changed how people worked. Thankfully, it seems as if the United States is once again turning a corner on the virus and things are getting better.

With verified new COVID-19 infections dropping, restaurant traffic ticking up marginally, and customers eager to spend, the economy is showing signs of escaping from the drag of the delta strain of the coronavirus.

But when September began, the number of new illnesses remained high. This caused decreased hours at many jobs and a fear from customers and employees to visit businesses.

Additionally, employers are still having difficulty finding workers since many people who lost their employment due to the epidemic have yet to seek work or have decided to move on and find a new career. Many economists have been perplexed by the longevity of that pattern, which has resulted in a record number of job opportunities. The demand for labor is high, so are the number of people looking for new jobs.

Conclusion

Combined, the Delta variant and lacking unemployment numbers are limiting the amount of job growth possible. While many predicted that this current time would find a booming economy, it seems as if the return to normalcy and prosperity has been put on hold for a bit longer.

The Great Resignation: Why Americans Are Quitting?

Introduction

Millions of Americans are deserting their jobs in record numbers. The American workforce has never seen an exodus from employment quite like this.

According to the US Labor Department, little under 4.3 million people left their employment in August. Employees all over the country feel that they have the ability and the right to leave their jobs if employers aren’t meeting certain requirements or treating them right. Indeed, workers have found that they have leverage for the first time in American history. Employers now require them more than they require a certain employer.

But why are Americans leaving their jobs in droves? What is causing this enormous shift away from certain businesses?

Who Is Quitting?

Service Industry

892,000 people who left their employment worked in the food service and hospitality industries. 721,000 retail workers quit, while 534,000 healthcare and social support professionals left their careers too.

When you examine the types of industries hit hardest by these resignations, you can start to see why they are happening. The pandemic definitely has had a huge impact on these sorts of jobs and it is causing many to reconsider what they are doing and who they are doing it for.

From food service to retail to healthcare – these are jobs that are directly impacted by the dangers and anxiety of the coronavirus pandemic. They are all high-stress jobs, since they deal with a public that is ever-coarsening, impatient, and furious in the post-pandemic age.

Other Job Industries

However, they aren’t the only employees who are packing up and saying goodbye to their bosses. Workers are departing at or near record levels in practically every industry, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Is it a case of individuals being dissatisfied with their work, or are they just confident in their ability to locate new ones? That’s what many experts believe.

Why Are They Quitting?

It seems like many employees are fed up with their current jobs and the pesky customers they serve. However, they also know that they have a wide variety of choices they can move onto. This is likely what is driving the mass resignations.

Labor Need is Driving Resignations

Currently there is a significant need for labor in the United States. Employees have the confidence to move on because of the high demand for work. Most people are aware that they may find a better job in their industry, one that pays more and provides more of the benefits they desire. There has never been a better moment for anyone wishing to shift careers totally, with plenty of opportunities available.

Essentially, America is in an endless loop of people quitting because they are unhappy. Those resignations cause a demand for labor and that demand for labor makes more people quit because they see opportunity. People feel like now is the time to change careers and the possibilities seem endless.

Conclusion

The pandemic has made many reorganize their priorities and that involves what they do for a living too. Eventually the job market will stabilize but, for now, millions are looking for employment in new, exciting places because they believe they can – and should.

Higher Heating Bills Coming This Winter, Feds Warn

As Fall becomes Winter, many are fearful that millions of families are about to experience a hike in heating bills. Many analysts are concluding that the months ahead will be very tough on the pocket book of many Americans due to inflation and the skyrocketing price of heating oil, natural gas, and more.

With the coronavirus pandemic still surging and the economy on an unstable ground, the idea of a cold winter with expensive bills sounds like a nightmare to many. What is causing the speculation that prices are about to rise? What is the root cause of this change?

Predictions for this Winter

Many business and industry analysts have predicted a harsh winter when it comes to the energy bill for many families.

Natural Gas

For example, natural gas-powered homes – which account for roughly half of all U.S. families – may spend $746 this winter, up 30% from a year earlier. This might result in their heating expenditures being the highest since the winter of 2008-2009.

Electricity

Meanwhile, households who use electricity, which account for around 41% of the country’s population, might see a relatively moderate 6% hike to $1,268. Heating oil users, who account for 4% of the country’s population, may see their costs rise by 43%, or more than $500, to $1,734.

Propane

Additionally, the most significant increases are predicted for homes that use propane. That accounts for only 5% of all families in the United States, but other households are also likely to suffer significant increases.

For most Americans, it will be a significant increase across the board. All in all, with global prices for heating oil, natural gas, and other fuels increasing, the US government has predicted that homeowners’ heating expenditures would rise by up to 54 percent this winter compared to last.

Inflation Strikes Again

All of this negative news serves as a harsh reminder of the global economy’s inflationary spiral. According to a different study provided by the US government, consumer prices in September were 5.4 percent higher than a year earlier. As a resurgent economy and clogged supply chains drive up costs for everything from autos to groceries, this is the highest inflation since 2008.

Employers, on the other hand, are not doing enough to keep up with the rate of inflation. Most workers’ pay hikes haven’t kept up with inflation so far. Workers’ average hourly earnings increased by 4.6 percent last month compared to a year ago. While that is good news it is becoming apparent that more needs to be done.

Conclusion

The coming winter will prove challenging for many reasons. The economy is rebounding, but slowly, while the job market remains in flux and many businesses face shortages. Inflation is only making things worse. Combined, this will lead to higher-than-normal electricity bills and yet another headache for many Americans.

End of Mortgage Relief May Boost Housing Inventory

As mortgage relief comes to an end, there’s going to be an onslaught of homeowners looking to sell their home, in order to pay for the mortgage and avoid foreclosure. Statistics show that there are more than 1.5 million homeowners who are 90 days late or more on their mortgage and aren’t in foreclosure.

So what does that mean for the housing market? What will the next few months look like? Read on for more details on what is going to happen and how the housing inventory is going to boost.

What is Going to Happen?

It’s predicted once those on mortgage forbearance programs leave in the next few months will increase the number of homes for sale by 15 percent. This increase is said to start showing in September and October when the federal forbearance programs end.

It’s also possible that the CARES act, which included the COVID mortgage forbearance, could be extended again. But, if that isn’t the case, there are a few things that homeowners who participated will have the option to do:

  1. Reinstatement: Here, you’ll pay a lump sum that covers the total amount your payments were reduced during forbearance along with interest and fees that accumulated during that time. Once reinstated, you’ll resume paying just as you did before forbearance.
  2. Repayment Plan: This method divides up the total amount you accrued during forbearance into a series of smaller payments. This is negotiable and payments are typically broken up into increments up to 12 months.
  3. Mortgage Modification: If you modify your mortgage, you completely change your whole loan to make monthly payments lower. Whatever you didn’t have to pay duing forbearance will just be added into your remaining balance.

How Will the Housing Inventory Boost?

In May 2020, there were approximately 4.7 million people in active forbearance during the shutdown. July of 2021 saw that number fall to around 1.9 million people. A Zillow report assumes that roughly 25% of those borrowers listed their homes in order to escape foreclosure. If that trend continues, the housing supply will increase by 31% with 26% of those houses being sold within the next three months.

This is going to be quite the change from the current supply as it’s currently at its lowest level in a long time. In fact, this is the lowest level the housing supply has been at since it was first tracked in the 1980s.

Parting Thoughts

Although the end of mortgage relief may mean some are forced to downsize, it will bring newfound relief to those who have been on the hunt for a while. If a new mortgage relief program isn’t proposed or passed before the end of the CARES act, the market boom is expected to have the most buzz between October and January.

If you’re participating in the mortgage forbearance program, you may want to start preparing yourself now. For those of you who have been on the hunt for a new home for a while now, it’s time to start getting excited again.

Starbucks Fall Drinks – Ranked from Worst to Best

The pumpkin spiced and apple-themed items are back on the Starbucks menu, which means fall has begun. You can customize each of the 34 fall drinks on the menu, and we are here to help you decide how you can do that according to your taste.

We tested all of their fall drinks and are here to rank a few from the worst to the best.

5. Iced Pumpkin Spice Latte

It has the same ingredients as the regular spiced latte, but something about the iced version is quite off-putting. We are assuming that it has something to do with the way the whipped cream melts into the warm latte drink. The iced latte does not allow for that to happen. What’s more, the spices taste even bitterer when they’re cold. We would have ranked it number 34 if we were ranking all the Starbucks drinks.

However, spiced lattes have made it to the Starbucks fall menu the 19th time this season. This means that it does please quite a lot of people.

4. Iced Apple Crisp Macchiato

When you first take a sip, it will probably be very confusing for you. This iced apple crisp macchiato will taste like regular coffee with a hint of burnt spices. Moreover, you may wonder if there’s any flavor of apple as your first sip might not at all be sweet.

After the first sip, we figured the reason for all these issues we faced. The caramel apple goodness sits at the bottom, and the only solution is to give it a good stir. But once you do that, the drink tastes too sweet to be able to finish it.

3. Iced Chai Latte with Pumpkin Cold Foam

Since this drink is so popular on TikTok, we gave it a try. Originally, the iced chai latte came with pumpkin foam. However, there are a number of options available for customization. Most people order it with oat milk as well. It is the ideal fall drink that can suit everyone’s taste. You can ask your barista for fewer pumps of chai and add an espresso shot instead. Or, you can choose to add a topping or pumpkin sauce. Adding apple, brown sugar, and vanilla can also change the game, in a good way, of course.

We rank it a number 3 because this drink is definitely worth ordering again.

2. Pumpkin Spice Blended Frappuccino

The pumpkin spice blended frappuccino is a quite underrated version of the very overrated pumpkin spice latte. However, it is our second favorite fall drink from the Starbucks menu for a reason. It has an entire army of fans and people who try to find its recipes to try at home. We’re sure you may have seen some of those recipes on social media.

While it does contain coffee, frappuccinos can’t really be classified as coffee drinks. They are more like a coffee-inspired version of shakes. You will taste the pumpkin spices in this one too, but just the right amount. You won’t be overwhelmed by the taste of the spices in this one, as opposed to other versions of pumpkin spice lattes.

1.    Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew

Starbucks’ best fall drink, the pumpkin cream cold brew, was released a few years ago and has been unbeatable since. Although a little expensive, the drink is the perfect mix of coffee and pumpkin spice. The flavor is neither too sweet nor overpowering.

The brew is vanilla syrup flavored, which you can totally skip if you like your coffee drinks without sugar. The cold cream foam perfectly melts into the drink as you sip, and while it tastes fantastic just like that, the hint of pumpkin certainly makes it more enjoyable.
